17. Mothers-to-be may receive an open U-shaped lei if they would like one. It must be open because in Hawaiian culture, putting a closed circular lei on an expecting mother is akin to wishing her fetus’ umbilical cord would wrap around its neck... Well, isn’t that just peachy?

18. Pay attention to which ear you put your flower on in Hawaii, ladies. If it’s on your right, it signals that you’re single. If it’s on your left ear, you’re conveying that you and your ring finger are already spoken for.

19. Billboards are illegal in Hawaii because they take away from the gorgeous scenery. It’s the same in Alaska, Maine, and Vermont.

20. The current American flag with 50 stars was designed by a high schooler named Robert Heft for a school project in 1958. He initially got a B-, but after submitting it to the White House and President Eisenhower declaring it the new official flag, his teacher bumped his grade up to an A... The kid’s design became the flag of the country, yet he only got an A, not an A+. Talk about a demanding teacher.

21. The USA has 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska. As for Puerto Rico and Washington D.C., Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, a territory, and Washington District of Columbia is, well, a district.

22. People born in Puerto Rico are technically US citizens. Oddly enough, they can’t vote in presidential elections but can somehow run for president. It’s a long story.

23. The bay glows bright blue at night in Puerto Rico. This is thanks to an incredible number of dinoflagellates, a type of algae that emit their own natural light. Put kayaking at night in the Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay, La Parguera, and especially Mosquito Bay on your bucket list! The view is totally worth losing a few drops of blood over.

24. The legal age to buy alcohol in Cuba is 16. That’s not the worst of it, though, because there is no age requirement to drink alcohol or buy and smoke cigars.

25. The average Cuban lives on $30 a month yet has a life expectancy of about 80 years, which is comparable to developed countries. Healthcare is free in Cuba, a communist dictatorship, but not in the United States.

26. Cuba is a paradise for lovers of classic cars. Because of its political climate, few new cars are brought into Cuba. When visiting the Cuban Republic, expect to see vintage Cadillacs, Chryslers, Jaguars, and Oldsmobiles rolling on the streets. You can’t bring them back home to add to your car collection, but at least you can ride them as taxis.

27. Compared to other cultures, Cubans may come off as aggressive. But don’t freak out. It’s normal for them to speak loudly, wave their hands about, nod and shake their heads often, and really get into your personal space. This sort of interaction is usually a sign of respect and closeness. They don’t like prolonged eye contact, though.

28. Cubans also talk with their faces. If you see a Cuban puckering their lips, it’s probably not to kiss you.
